Contributed by Dennis on Saturday November 25, @06:26AM
from the i-should-have-majored-in-art dept.
Clarert writes, "A bored grad student at Little Whitsitt State College created a modern art sculpture in the campus courtyard made entirely out of old 386 computers. The cool part is that this Rube Goldberg-like contraption actually works -- part of it is a fully functional Beowulf cluster! The Computer Science Club's website is served by the cluster, which is nicknamed Geekzilla." I wish they had cool stuff like that at my college.

What's Going On With MyGlobe.Com?
Contributed by Dennis on Saturday November 25, @03:55AM
from the the-truth-is-out-there dept.
Pundits are worried about MyGlobe.Com, which is not only in financial trouble but has been acting very erratically lately. Instead of laying off employees that they don't need, they've increased their workforce by 45% even though in a few months they'll start bouncing payroll checks. According to some, the company is doomed because it had a business plan written on a napkin. So what gives?

Why Did Effort-intensive.Com Go Bust?
Contributed by Ryan on Friday November 24, @06:59PM
from the can-you-say-beowulf-cluster? dept.
MSNBC takes a look at why Effort-intensive.Com failed and what they probably could have done to survive. They suggest that they fell into the trap of believing that "If you build it, they will come and spend money", which, unlike in movies, doesn't happen in the Real World. Another explanation is that the company built a website with gratuitious Flash, JavaScript, and ActiveX features that irritated everyone. I realized as I read this that I never once bought anything from Effort-intensive.Com. Oh well.
